A responsible use of resources allows the laundry large savings and creates incentives for investment. Depending on local legislation, energy suppliers are obliged to make compensation payments per ton of CO2. The basis for this is the EU emissions trading which evolved from the Kyoto Protocol of 1997. Outside of the EU, there are other local requirements. As a result, the prices for fossil fuels will rise significantly in all markets over the next few years.

With new Kannegiesser technology, our customers achieve direct savings in energy costs and a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. Due to the increasing pricing of CO2 emissions, this investment pays for itself quickly in the future.

Pricing of CO2 emissions

In Germany, from 2021 onwards, all fuel distributors will be required to determine emissions annually, acquire appropriate certificates and submit them to the German Emissions Trading Authority (DEHSt) at the Federal Environment Agency. The prices for the certificates are fixed by law until 2025 and will be auctioned for at least EUR 55 per ton of CO2 from 2026.

Internationally, there are more and more countries that have already introduced a similar system or will do so in the near future. In the table you will find an overview of the current pricing of CO2 emissions in various European countries.

Further investment incentives through CO2 reduction

In addition to the savings in energy costs, the reduction of CO2 emissions with modern Kannegiesser technology enables further advantages for the laundry.

There is a large number of programs to promote and support energetic measures. By successfully applying for a grant, often a considerable part of the investment can be subsidized. Since the funding landscape is very heterogeneous (from EU to district level), it is the job of the local energy consultant to evaluate and apply for such funding together with the customer. Kannegiesser can support this process with project-specific data sheets and calculations.

The reduction of CO2 emissions also plays a major role in the goal of achieving so-called "climate neutrality". The way to climate neutrality can be divided into three steps: First, the CO2 footprint is determined for the company, individual processes or even individual products. Then, the company attempts to reduce the CO2 emissions by appropriate energy efficiency measures. In the last step, the remaining CO2 emissions are offset by voluntary financial participation in climate protection projects. The "climate neutrality" achieved in this way can be certified and used by the company in marketing, to increase its own market value or for benchmarking with competitors.
